The rocks underlying you are full of fossils. However, it's the getting to them that is difficult, because the land is covered by debris from the last glacial age. There are areas in southwestern Indiana, near the Ohio border, that should have rocks that are extremely fossiliferous exposed at the surface (these are from the Cincinnatian series of rocks (about 400 million years or so in age). These rocks can contain abundant brachiopods, cephalopods, gastropods, trilobites, and other marine critters). In northwestern Ohio there are rock quarries, but you probably would get ejected from them, for trespassing (safety concerns, even after they are closed). I would suggest talking to someone at the geology department of a nearby university (isn't Ball State close?). I went to a university in NW Ohio, for my MS degree, and there were many local areas for rock and fossil collection. If you want to just go and see what you can find, then your best bet is southeastern Indiana/southwestern Ohio, for proximity. Neither should be more than about 2 hours travel time, and I'm sure your child would love it.
