I need some advice for traveling through New York City and Long Island.?
Hi, I am traveling from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Long Island, New York to buy a car - I know - long way for a car, but this is my dream car. Basically, I just need to get out there...I can drive the new car back home. I have never traveled out east before, and I am looking for the best/cheapest way to get there. I can drive out with a friend, and drive separately back home...I can fly one-way to JFK or ISP...I can take an Amtrak train out there...I can rent a car, etc. etc. There are a lot of options. What would you recommend is the easiest/cheapest way to get to Long Island? Also, if I arrive at say, Penn Station or JFK Airport, how do I get to the island? Where would I go to find info about taxis, buses, or trains from the Manhattan to Long Island? Is there anyone familiar with NYC that can tell me the most efficient means of getting from the City and/or JFK to Islip on Long Island (buses, trains, etc.)? Thanks so much for your help.

If you're going to Islip, fly into ISP (Long Island-MacArthur airport). It's actually IN Islip. Then you'll only have to drive through the City once (on your way out). The good news is, ISP is serviced by Southwest, among others. SW will let you buy a one-way ticket without charging you a mountain of fees. There are taxis at the airport and hotels in the area. Good luck with the car!

well all those ways are good but I would take a plane then get the train out to the island. it would be faster than trying to drive. you need to make sure you hit the right train either to Nas. or Suf. county. when you get off the plane take the metro rail( don't remember wich line) but it takes you straight to the long island railroad

Take Amtrak from Fort Wayne to Penn Station in New York City, where It's located beneath Madison Square Garden, in Midtown Manhattan then follow signs directly for Long Island Rail Road Trains then take the Ronkonkoma Branch Line to the Central Islip Station with connections to buses and taxicabs. http://www.amtrak.com http://www.mta.info http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr/html/ttn/centrali.htm

Long Island is um LONG -- almost 10O miles long so it all depends exactly where on the Island you are going -- For trains look at Long Island Railroad section of MTA website. JFK in Queens which is on Long Island...
